Resources to get you prepared fast for the PE petroleum exam

Is becoming a licensed Petroleum Engineer your dream? You must pass the PE Petroleum exam to apply for professional licensure. Read this article to know more about the resources that can help you ace the PE exam.

PE Petroleum Exam Overview

The NCEES administers the PE Petroleum exam in computer-based testing (CBT) format once each year at Pearson VUE test centers.

The exam is 9.5 hours long and comprises 85 questions.

What Are the Best Resources to Prepare for the PE Petroleum Exam?

Reference Material

A petroleum reference guide developed by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is the only reference material you can use during the exam. Purchase the SPE's Petroleum Engineering Handbook, volumes 1-7, familiarize yourself with these books, and focus more on your weaker subject areas.

The "Petroleum Engineering Guidebook: Designed for the Professional Engineer" by M. Dammeyer is another good book you can utilize to study for the PE exam.

PE Petroleum Prep Course

You may find the reference books very dull, and self-studying using the reference books without being distracted is challenging. So, sign up for a PE prep course on popular platforms like School of PE to enhance your preparation.

Enrolling in a prep course is one of the best methods to prepare for the PE exam, and a good prep course comes with several advantages such as:

  • Access to course notes, textbooks, lectures, and practice problems - all in one place.

  • Expert Guidance: Expert tutors can help you understand complex concepts, solve difficult problems, and clarify your doubts.

  • Different delivery methods including Live Online classes or Ondemand courses

  • Complimentary calculator and math training

  • Access to discussion forums. You can communicate with fellow students and share your ideas and solutions for complex problems.

  • The pass rates of students who take up an exam prep course are high compared to the national average.

Practice Exams

Take up time-based practice exams to familiarize yourself with the CBT format and improve your calculation speed. Solve several practice problems to hone your problem-solving skills.

Grade your practice tests to identify your areas of strengths and weaknesses.

When the exam date is approaching, spend a week or two to solve and review practice problems.

General Tips for the PE exam

Here are some things you can do to improve your chances of passing:

  • 1. Developing and adhering to a solid study schedule can make all the difference. Start your prep at least six months before the exam.

  • 2. Maintain a checklist of the items you should carry with you on the exam day (E.g., Photo ID, documents, etc.).

  • 3. On average, you have a little less than 3 minutes to answer each question. If you cannot solve a problem within 3 minutes, flag that problem and move on. You do not get extra points for solving the questions in consecutive order.

Start collecting the resources early and be confident that you have the technical prowess to pass the PE exam. Maintain a clear headspace and hold on to that dedication!

Do not cram up the night before the exam and get a good night's sleep.

Good luck!
